Some Memories Never Fade

A week in competitions

Is it worth entering the little competitions?

Since I started taking photographs I have been looking at competitions in magazines online and in local newspapers.  I was told very early on that the more competitions you entered the better. Your name and work will be seen by those in charge of magazines. Although I was warned that you would sometimes enter and not receive any acknowledgement or any feedback whatsoever but that I should not take this to heart and carry on submitting my work.

So I have, as you can see on the Editorials I have been lucky enough to have had my work accepted into the 200 Faces Exhibition run by the Photographic Angle.
This spurred me on and since then I have been entering work into various competitions. This week it seems to have made the effort worthwhile.
The monkey picture at the top of this piece is entitled ‘Companionship’ it was taken at Monkey World in Devon, this is a sanctuary for rescued Monkeys, the chimps in the photograph had been rescued from labs or the illegal pet trade.
The picture was set up perfectly just for me to get the settings right and snap the picture. The picture has more of a meaning because of the story behind the chimps being there. I think the picture conveys this.
This week it has been picked as the winner of the ‘through the fence’ competition run by Photographer Monthly. (http://www.photographymonthly.com/Blog/2012/11/Through-the-fence-photo-competition-winner-announced)
And it won the picture of the month competition run by Picture Frames Express.
I am grateful that my work is being judged and looked at by professionals and is receiving some recognition.
Long may this continue. For all of those budding photographers, don’t be put off by the adverts for the competition or the other entries, submit your work and get some feedback. After all we ourselves are the biggest critics of our work.
